FAQs
What is The Clover Table like?
1
The Clover Table is a welcoming, beautifully hosted mahjong salon where guests gather to learn, play, and enjoy the rhythm of the game together. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and encouraging — never intimidating or overly competitive. We believe mahjong should be both fun and confidence-building.
I’m brand new to mahjong. Is this the right place for me?
2
Absolutely. The Welcome Table is designed especially for beginners who are just getting started. Lessons are taught clearly and patiently, with plenty of encouragement along the way. You’ll learn the basics, play guided rounds, and leave feeling more confident and excited to keep playing.
Lessons are intentionally small and thoughtfully paced so every guest feels comfortable asking questions and learning at their own speed. Teaching is clear, patient, and encouraging — our goal is for you to understand the game and truly enjoy it, not feel rushed or overwhelmed.

How are lessons taught?
Open Table is for guests who feel comfortable playing independently and want to enjoy relaxed, beautifully hosted open play. The focus is on fun, friendly competition and gathering with others who simply love the game. It’s social, welcoming, and never high-pressure.

What is Open Table like?
Not at all — you simply need to feel comfortable playing independently without step-by-step instruction. If you’re still learning or want more guided support, The Welcome Table is the perfect place to start.
Do I need to be an expert to join Open Table?
5
Think cozy, chic, and welcoming. Tables are thoughtfully set, guests are warmly greeted, and the experience is designed to feel special yet relaxed. Whether you’re learning or playing, you’ll find a gracious environment where everyone is encouraged and celebrated.
6
What is the overall vibe?
Our tables are centered around fun, learning, and connection — where the focus is on fun, friendly competition, and enjoying the table together. While friendly competition is part of the game, the atmosphere is always supportive and joyful rather than intense or cutthroat.
7
Will it feel competitive?
Many guests do! The Clover Table is a wonderful place to meet new people who share a love of mahjong. You’ll be warmly welcomed and comfortably seated with others at a similar level of play.
8
What if I come alone?
Can I sit with my friends?
9
Yes, absolutely! When reserving your seat for The Welcome Table or Open Table, you’ll see a place on the registration form to list the names of friends you’re attending with. This helps us thoughtfully seat your group together so you can enjoy the table as a shared experience.
Just yourself! All materials — mats, tiles, cards, racks, and table lights — are provided so you can relax and enjoy the experience.

What should I bring?
What type of mahjong & rules are played?
11
At The Clover Table, we play American Mahjong and follow the rules and official card issued each year by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL).
American Mahjong is a structured, social version of the game that uses the annual NMJL card to guide play and strategy. This helps create consistency at the table and ensures everyone is playing by the same set of rules.
If you’re new to the game, don’t worry — everything you need to know is taught clearly and patiently at The Welcome Table. If you’re already familiar with American Mahjong and the NMJL card, you’ll feel right at home during Open Table play.
